Ermelo Monastery
Church of Santa Maria do Ermelo

What remains of the monastery is one of the most enigmatic cases of our Romanesque art, discussing both the chronology of the work and the context in which it was created. In recent decades, two antagonistic views have taken school and there is no easy and consensual acceptance of one over the other.

The origins of the monastery are also discussed, and some authors claimed a greater antiquity than the one the documents claim (cf. ALVES, Dec. 1982, p.49). It is certain that D. Teresa, in the early years of the 12th century, decided to found a monastery of Benedictine monks, intended to house noble women (GRAF, 1986, vol.2, p.33).

One of the perspectives states that it would have the monumentality of Ganfei and Fiães (IDEM). Another points to the work being designed a century later, at the time the monastery passed into the hands of the Cistercians (ALMEIDA, 1978; 1986; 1987; 2001).
